Seasonal Ayurveda
How you can work with the seasonal changes : eating, living and cleansing
Nature has its own rhythms which affect our bodies. We do not have to experience too much stress and dis-ease in these changes if we work with these rhythms and changes and adjust our eating patterns, lifestyle and cleanse according to the seasons. We can live in harmony with nature.
The strength of our digestion varies throughout the year, Summer is a time of less digestive strength so we want to eat lighter, hydrating and cooling foods (in line with our own constitution and imbalances). In Winter we have a stronger agni/digestion and can eat heavier foods and want warming more moistened meals. Here is a basic guide:
Spring (Kapha Season)-lighter , warm and gently spiced meals . Introduce sprouts and more greens and lentils. Nature is naturally not producing dairy at this time (if you ever bought raw goats. dairy you know its not available yet), so go lighter on this, reduce heavier and oilier foods too. More invigorating exercise, dry brush or garshana and stronger breath work to clear stagnation.
Summer (Pitta Season)- cooling, hydrating foods, vitamin c rich so you have more protection from the sun. Fresh herbs, fruits, juicy vegetables. Raw food should only be eaten if your constitution allows. Do not overheat in exercise, choose cooler times like early morning/late afternoon and do cooling breathing practices.
Fall (Vata Season)- there is more susceptibility to sickness so eat warmer, grounding foods and stews, soups, roots, ghee. Abhyanga or self massage with warm oils and gentle yoga and calming rituals.
Winter (Late Vata and Kapha)- more heavier foods like heavier grains, roasts, healthy fats, spices, Ojas or immunity building foods. More rest, and warmth and self care rituals.
Cleanse at the appropriate times (fall and Spring) and consume herbals teas to kindle agni and remove ama/toxins.
Always nourish and restore Ojas post cleansing and ground. Do not cleanse in pregnancy , early post party or if too depleted.
